I thank Special Coordinator Wennesland and Secretary-General Lockyear for their sobering briefings in which they presented the grim realities on the ground. I thank you, Mr. Lockyear for your frankness even in the face of possible reprisals. We also offer condolences on the loss of the lives of your colleagues and we salute the bravery of those who continue to operate bringing service to Gaza in these very trying times.

Statement by Ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett at the UN Security Council Briefing on the Security Council Mission to Colombia (7 to 11 February 2024)

Today’s meeting is convened for the co-leads of the Security Council Mission to Colombia, that is, Guyana, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, to share their observations and assessment of the mission which was undertaken from 7th to 11th February.

I will now make a statement in my capacity as representative of Guyana, focusing on the meetings which I chaired.

Colleagues,

Guyana is disappointed that this Council has once again been unable to deliver a ceasefire for the people of Gaza. A ceasefire is the difference between life and death for the hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and others trapped in the war zone that the Gaza Strip has become.
