Madame President,

1. I have the honor to deliver this statement on behalf of the A3+ namely—Algeria, Guyana, Sierra Leone, and my own country, Somalia.

2. We thank today’s briefers—Special Envoy Hans Grundberg, and Assistant Secretary-General Joyce Msuya from OCHA—for their insightful updates. We also welcome the participation of the Permanent Representative of Yemen.

Statement delivered by H.E. Amar Bendjama, Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations, on behalf of the A3+, at the Security Council Briefing on 'The situation in the Middle East' (Syria-Chemical Weapons)

Madame President,

I have the honour to deliver this joint statement on behalf of the A3 Plus, namely, Guyana, Sierra Leone, Somalia and my own country, Algeria.

We thank Mrs. Izumi Nakamitsu, High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, for the briefing, and we welcome the participation in this meeting of the representatives of the Syrian Arab Republic and Türkiye.

Thank You, Mr. President.

Mr. President,

When this Council met yesterday to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine, many members, including Guyana, called for a lasting ceasefire and for the conflict parties to prioritize dialogue and take concrete steps toward ending the war. We reiterate that call today.

I thank USG Di Carlo and OCHA Director Mrs. Lisa Doughten for the updates provided and welcome the participation of the Representative(s) of Ukraine, Czechia, Estonia, Poland, Iceland, and the European Union in today’s meeting.

Mr. President,

Like clockwork, this Council knows that every month we will meet to discuss the situation in Ukraine, some months as many as four times. In similar terms, we have grown accustomed to expecting that the meetings will conclude, and we would not have gotten closer to a solution.

The A3+ voted in favor of resolution 2780/25 agreeing to a technical rollover of six months for the authorizations set out in Resolution 2733 (2024) to implement the arms embargo related to Libya.
