Statements

Statement by H.E. Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Permanent Representative of Guyana to the UN, in her capacity as President of the UNSC for June, at the UNGA commemorative meeting on the 80th anniversary of the signing of the Charter of the United Nations

Mr. President,

Eighty (80) years ago, in the aftermath of two devastating global wars, visionary leaders gathered in San Francisco with a profound understanding of the urgent need for a new world – one built on the principles of peace, security, and international cooperation. The Charter they forged was not a mere document; it was a testament to the resilience of humanity; an unwavering hope for a better future, and a commitment to actively build that future.

I thank USG Rosemary DiCarlo for presenting the nineteenth report of the Secretary-General on the implementation of resolution 2231 and Ambassador Samuel Žbogar for presenting the Facilitator’s report. I also thank Ambassador Lambrinidis for his briefing.

In light of recent the escalations over the past two weeks, Guyana welcomes the announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. We reiterate our call for dialogue and a return to the negotiating table, as the only way forward for a diplomatic solution. One that promotes regional and international peace and security.

Colleagues,
Just two days ago, we met in these chambers and made urgent calls for diplomacy and de-escalation in relation to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran. The Secretary General appealed to give peace a chance, and many of us echoed that call.

Excellencies,

We meet today amidst immense challenges to international peace and security. This is manifested in the unprecedented number of conflicts and growing tensions in many parts of the world where peace is becoming increasingly fragile.

As challenges to international peace and security evolve, so too must our approach to resolving and preventing conflict. This requires us to delve deeper, including by addressing the root causes of conflict.
