Madame President,

Thank you for convening this meeting and allow me to also express appreciation to our briefers Mr. Rajasingham and Ms. Soeripto for the insight they provided on the worsening crisis in the Occupied Palestinian territories, particularly as it relates to the food security situation and the threatening conditions under which humanitarian workers are operating.

Madame President, colleagues,

Statement by H.E. Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Permanent Representative of Guyana to the United Nations, at Security Council meeting on “Children and Armed Conflict: Addressing the Consequences of the Denial of Humanitarian Access for Children"

Madam President

I thank Malta for convening today’s important discussion. I also thank SRSG Gamba, Deputy Executive Director Chaiban of UNICEF and Executive Director Niger- Thomas for sharing their perspectives.

In the Convention on the Rights of the Child, States Parties committed to make the best interest of the child the primary consideration in all actions concerning children. They also undertook to take all feasible measures to ensure protection and care of children affected by armed conflict.

Statement delivered by Her Excellency Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Permanent Representative of Guyana to the United Nations, at the UNSC meeting on the 'Situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question'

Mr. President, Colleagues,

Guyana is pleased that this Council has finally been able to adopt a resolution which demands an immediate ceasefire albeit for the month of Ramadan, leading to a lasting and sustainable ceasefire. After more than five months of a war of utter terror and destruction, a ceasefire is the difference between life and death for the hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and others.
