Mr. President,

I have the honour to deliver this statement on behalf of the A3+ Member States, namely Algeria, Mozambique, Sierra Leone and my own country, Guyana.

Let me begin by expressing appreciation to your delegation and the French delegation for ably steering the process for the development of this resolution which was adopted today.

First of all, as I am addressing the Council for the first time during this month, I would like to congratulate you and Sierra Leone for assuming the Presidency. I assure you of our support during your tenure. I also would like to thank Russia for its successful Presidency during the month of July.

Allow me to congratulate you, Sierra Leone, on the assumption of the Presidency to the Council. Rest assured of Guyana’s support. We also thank the Russian Federation for their skillful presidency last month.

Mr. President,

Let me begin by thanking you along with the delegations of Algeria and China for requesting this briefing. It is critical for this Council to maintain an active and consistent focus on Gaza, as should be the case for every other conflict situation where the level of civilian suffering is of enormous proportions. I also thank Deputy Commissioner General De Meo and Deputy Special Coordinator Hadi for their sobering briefings.

Thank you, Mr. President,

I thank Mr. Ebo for his briefing and take note of Dr. Kneissl’s contribution to the discussion.

Guyana continues to express concern about the mounting civilian casualties and widespread destruction sustained in the ongoing war.

We maintain that any lasting solution will not be achieved through military action; it must be done through diplomacy and good-faith negotiations conducted in accordance with the provisions of the United Nations Charter and international law.

1. I have the honour to deliver this statement on behalf of the A3 Plus, namely Algeria, Guyana, Mozambique and my own country Sierra Leone.

2. The A3 Plus thanks Special Envoy Mr. Hans Grundberg and OCHA’s Acting Emergency Relief Coordinator Ms. Joyce Msuya, for their comprehensive updates and valuable insights on the security and humanitarian situations in Yemen.

3. We also welcome the participation of the representative of Yemen to this meeting.

Statement delivered by H.E. Carolyn Rodrigues Birkett, Permanent Representative of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana to the United Nations during the UNSC Briefing on Threats to International Peace and Security

I thank USG Di Carlo and Major General Beary for their briefings and recognize the presence of the Representative of Israel in today’s meeting.

Guyana is deeply concerned about the recent escalation of tensions in the Middle East. The Council must exert all efforts to avoid a wider regional conflagration.

We share the USG’s concern about the recent airstrikes between the Houthis in Yemen and Israel, which claimed the lives of several persons.
