A3+ statement by H.E. Ambassador Michael Kanu, Permanent Representative of Sierra Leone to the UN, at the UNSC briefing on the Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflict: IPC Famine Review Committee report on The Sudan

Mr. President,

1. I have the honor to deliver this Statement on behalf of the A3+ members, namely Algeria, Guyana, Somalia, and my own country Sierra Leone.

2. We thank the Presidency for scheduling this important meeting at the request of the United Kingdom, Guyana, and Slovenia with support from Denmark and Sierra Leone, to discuss the deeply disturbing report on famine in the Sudan, a direct consequence of the conflict in the country.

As this is the first formal meeting for the month, I take this opportunity to congratulate Algeria on assuming the presidency of the Security Council and welcome the newly elected members – Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama and Somalia. I also commend the United States for its able leadership of the Council in December and extend best wishes to Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland who just concluded their terms.

Explanation of vote by H.E. Ambassador Amar Bendjama, Permanent Representative of Algeria to the UN, on behalf of the A3+ members at the UNSC adoption of the draft resolution on the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM)

I have the honor to deliver this statement on behalf of the A3+, namely Guyana, Mozambique, Sierra Leone and my own country Algeria.

At the outset, we wish to thank the Penholder, the United Kingdom, for its extensive efforts to reach a compromise on this important draft.

We welcome the presence of the Permanent Representatives of Somalia and Ethiopia to this meeting.

Today’s resolution marks an important milestone in Somalia’s pathway in consolidating state-building and stability.

I thank High Representative Nakamitsu for the important updates provided.

Today’s meeting comes on the heels of alarming reports of further escalations in the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Media reports this morning of a missile strike that damaged six foreign diplomatic missions in Kyiv and killed at least one individual are deeply distressing. Guyana maintains that any attack directed against a diplomatic facility is unacceptable.

Statement by Her Excellency Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Permanent Representative of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana to the United Nations at the adoption of the United Nations Security Council Resolution on Children and Armed Conflict

President,

Guyana welcomes the adoption of the resolution on “Ensuring Sustainable Child Protection Capacity including during UN Peace Operation Transitions” which we were pleased to vote for and cosponsor. I thank the delegation of Malta for this valuable initiative that places child protection at the heart of peace operations.
